The town of Lewis is a quiet community located on a hill top overlooking the Nishnabotna River Valley and the Lewis Cold Springs Lake. A population of 444 people enjoy a rural location with a rich historical background, surrounded by abundant agricultural endeavors and a vibrant community organization. Well-known for its National Historic Landmark, the Hitchcock House, built in 1856 by Reverend George and Mrs. Caroline Hitchcock, and used as a station during the Underground Railroad movement.

The patriotism and history of Cass County is depicted by Iowa “rock” artist Ray “Bubba” Sorensen on this 15,000 lb boulder located in East Park. Perched upon a large pad in the shape of Iowa, the rock features the Hitchcock House, Maj. Belle Reynolds, and Cass County’s own 23rd Regiment, Iowa Volunteers, Company 1, Calvary Unit that camped in the park during the Civil War.

This ferry keeper’s home witnessed thousands of pioneers going west, and the Underground Railroad going north. This site was central for the many trails that passed nearby, including the stage coach, the Mormon Handcart Companies of 1856-57, and immigrants going west to find silver, gold and land. Explore and Camp at Cold Springs Park!
This 104 acre park is located just South of Lewis, IA on Lewis Rd. As you enter the park, the lake area, boat ramp/dock, swimming area and picnic area are to your right. On your left are the offices of Cass County Conservation, and the next driveway is the regional IDNR Fisheries Station.
