Cumberland, Iowa
Cumberland, IA
In 1884, the Chicago, Burlington, and Quincy Railroad bought land from John Worthington for a town to serve as the terminus of a branch from Creston, IA. By time the railroad arrived in 1886, Cumberland was a thriving town with grocery stores, wagon makers, blacksmiths, drug stores, harness makers, hard-ware and furniture stores, lumber yards, banks, barber shops, a creamery, hotel, livery barns, etc.
Although it remains a small town, it boasts an outstanding volunteer fire department established in 1935 and serves its 260+ residents that call Cumberland home. Visit the Cumberland city site: http://cumberlandiowa.com/
